Head and Neck Surgery

Head and neck surgery can treat a variety of head and neck related problems including conditions such as sinus disorders, thyroid problems & head and neck cancers. Many patients who have cancers in the head or neck receive surgery to remove cancerous tissue and tumours. Reconstructive surgery is an important procedure to regain the natural appearance after some cancer surgeries.

What is head and neck surgery?

Head and necks surgeons are commonly referred to as ear, nose and throat doctors or otolaryngologists. Surgical speciality dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of many common disorders affecting the head and neck is referred to as Otolaryngology.

Head and neck surgery may be a treatment for a variety of head and neck cancers. Head and neck cancers may also affect the tonsils, throat, nasal cavity, salivary glands, larynx, sinuses, and lips.

Other disorders treated by head and neck surgery include:

  • Pinched nerves
  • Intense dizziness and motion sickness
  • Pressure on the spinal cord
  • Upper spinal issues
  • Head and neck injuries
  • Sinus pain

Head and neck surgery process

Head and neck surgeries are of many different types. Minimally invasive procedures can be included in the surgery to speed up the recovery time. Doctors and their patients together will go over the procedure in detail. You can ask your doctor if you have any concerns or questions regarding the surgery.

Head and neck surgery recovery

Recovery time depends on the surgery. Neck dissections that are done to remove tumours may require two to three days in the hospital if there are no complications. Other surgeries may require up to one week in the hospital.

After their discharge from the hospital, most of the patients will need assistance. Patients will feel very exhausted for about a week after their surgery.

Head and neck surgery may not be the final procedure for many patients. To regain a natural look to the face and neck some may need reconstructive surgery. Radiation or chemotherapy may also be needed for patients with head or neck cancer. Other patients may need rehabilitation services such as speech therapy.

Speak with your doctor about what to expect after surgery and the information for the best recovery process for you.
